A few selected long shots

May 12th, 2007

I selected three long shots that realistically have no way in hell in winning. But I have to do it. 50% of American voters don’t vote for a Presidential candidate. We have become too cynical, and a lot of folks aren’t fooled by these ass clowns. You have people like John McCain and Hillary Clinton who are so full of bullshit that if you played hide and go seek with them, you’d smell them before you’d see them.

I know a lot of you like Barack and Rudy. But currently, they’re both tee-toeing on the line. They had their ideals, and they’re learning they’ll probably have to sacrifice a few of them to win.

Now, these three gents have their ideals and are sticking to them. Because of that, there’s no way they’ll win. Not a chance. I have to give them props though.

Dennis Kucinich (Democrat) - A smiling idealist, Kucinich won’t win the Democratic nomination. Props to the guy because unlike politicians in the Democratic Party who watch the opinion polls before they decide how they feel on Iraq, Kucinich was against the war from the beginning (as was yours truly).

The guy’s for decriminalizing marijuana, which is a good thing. It sickens me that folks are actually in jail for smoking that stuff, and it really sickens me that we’re losing all kinds of tax revenue because it’s illegal.

Repeal of the Patriot Act (cool), Jobs and withdrawal from NAFTA and the WTO (cool), and he’s an environmentalist (very cool). No, not the fake one who do silly stuff like drive around in a Hybrid as a promotion stunt, but the real deal.

Why he won’t win - He’s anti-war, and somewhat anti-military. No, I’m not saying that as an insult, he really is. He also got an F- from the Gun Owners of America.

Why he’s still laughing - He’s got a beautiful wife and he claims that ever since he’s become a Vegan, his sex life has been incredibly potent. More power to the guy, but he won’t be the Democrat come election day.

Tom Tancredo (Republican) - Got famous for standing up against illegal immigration. That’s how he got my attention. Good job, Tom. He’s also highly against gun control, which you know I’d like. I love how he calls out the ACLU as hypocrites for not standing up for the 2nd. More props. He’s also against political correctness. I like that.

Why he won’t win - He’s for a flat tax or National Sales Tax, both of which I think are more fair than what we have now. It’s political suicide though.

Why he’s still smiling - He helped illegal immigration to a real issue. Let’s hope whomever wins does a better job than the absolutely pathetic job done by our current President.

Ron Paul (Republican) - If there’s one man who “gets it” when it comes to guns, it’s Ron Paul. A professional medical doctor, I have to give him props just because he’s not a lawyer. The last thing we need are more lawyers in there.

What I like - Guns, lower taxes, real Sovereignty (out of NAFTA, GATT, the WTO, etc), tough on illegal immigration, for protecting our privacy against government intrusion (of which our current President highly differs).

Why he won’t win - He’d cut spending, including corporate welfare. Could you imagine someone cutting corporate welfare? So much for getting elected.

Why he’s still laughing - He’s genuinely happy.  You can tell he still loves his wife, loves his kids, and his grandkids.  Good for him.

I’ll do 3rd Party folks later, when I get more info. If I find another long shot I like, I’ll do a part II to this.

I like how anti-war Kucinich is, but he’s also a little too pro-UN. Actually the guy is a lot too pro-UN for me. He’s also way too anti-private property for me, but that goes without saying for any of the democrats.

I don’t really know anything about Tancredo.

Of all the candidates running from both parties, Ron Paul is the best. I’m fairly certain he’s the only one who’s read the constitution.

Slade - And with good reason. I’m not dogging the guy, just saying it’s more likely than not that he will compromise his ideals to get elected. He seems to have a lot of the same ideals you do, which is good for you.

Lime - Oh well. I’ll try to find someone you like.

Scott - I’d never vote for Kucinich, but wanted to bring forth someone who has some of the better ideals of the Left, like decriminalizing marijuana and environmentalism. But if Ron Paul ran was the person, that’s who I’d vote for.

    Zombie,

Good to have you back in the political arena. I missed your comments. You were one of the few who agreed with me on just about everything, and on top of that you are damn fun to read.

I support Ron Paul the most out of all 3 candidates becuase he runs on a purely Constitutional platform. If the Constitution doesn’t say the government should be involved in certain areas, he votes against the legislation.

I have already send Dr. Paul some contributions for his run for office and will send more as I can afford to. I also sent him a letter offering my services to hand out flyers, make calls, whatever I can do.

I am also making a banner similar to the ones seen on the first you tube video here

    http://www.rescue-us.org/ronpaulrevolutionhome.htm

I intend to hand it from my house in front.

I would like to see Paul win with Tancredo as the VP. That would be a helluva ticket.

By any chance did you see the GOP debate? Did you see when McCain was asked if he was Prez if he would select Tancredo to run Immigration? McCain looked almost shocked and then stammered something and said No. Bet that made the people of Arizona real damn happy!

If you want to read more of my writings I also have another webpage set up for me by a woman who runs the Arizona Free Press. The URL is

Nice having you back. Good to know I am not 100% alone up here in Northern CA on the issue of illegal immigration.

I think one of the first campaign reforms we need to make is to eliminate public opinion polls! The candidates need to stand up for what they believe in and let the chips fall where they may.

This was only the smallest of points in your post, but we already have a sort of flat tax. The Alternative Minimum Tax, which more and more upper middle class people are falling into (but not as many as the media leads us to believe) acts very closely to a flat tax. What you do is take your original taxable income, add back most of your deductions, take one big standard deduction and then apply a certain tax rate (very simplified explanation). That is about as flat a tax as you are going to ever get. Since everyone hates the AMT and thinks it is BS, I’d say that most people wouldn’t like a flat tax . . . but then again, who does likes taxes????

sorry - I see taxes and I just comment.

  8. comment number 8 by: Scott

Taxes are theft. There’s no fair way to steal.

  9. comment number 9 by: The Zombieslayer

Tshsmom - Good idea. I think they do a lot more harm than good, for exactly that reason.

Joe - I think the problem folks have with the AMT is it’s in addition to your regular tax. So you get hit with income taxes, state taxes (if they apply), local taxes (if they apply), then AMT on top of that. Enough to drive someone bonkers.

Scott - Well, I’m not an anarchist, but I do think we pay way too much tax. I like having sewage, fire, and I’ll readily admit I’d be without a college education had it not been for the gov’t help. Where we’re at now is sick. We shouldn’t be paying 5/12ths of our paychecks to taxes, which is about what we do now. It’s time to start voting some of these bums out, cut spending, cut the deficit, cut foreign aid, cut corporate welfare, make Germany and Japan pay for their own military, and above all, cut taxes. Get out of the UN as well, for that’s one of the biggest wastes of money.

Did anyone see 60 minutes last night with one of the candidates with his wife and they were asking him what he believes in? Just wondering. I cant remember his name. I am so glad I dont really have an opinion in this matter. I hate politics but I like to try and give my best answer when there is a chance. Have a good day.

I like having sewage, fire, etc.

Sure, so do I. I also like having hotdogs, hamburgers, and toilet seats. But we know from obvious examples that private individuals do a much better job of providing these things than the State. And unlike the State private business actually have to satisfy their customers to make a profit. With the State all they have to do to make money is steal more of yours.

You’ll remember the fuss that was made when the defense department was buying 640-dollar toilet seats and 400-dollar claw hammers. We can see how absurd these costs are because they are compared to the free market costs of 10-dollar toilet seats and 5-dollar claw hammers. But we have no way to compare the ridiculous costs of a 10-gazillion dollar stealth bomber. We just assume that’s what they cost to make because no one in the private sector makes them.

Same goes for any other service. Fire protection, education, sewers, water, even police protection and military defense. All of these are simply services that the government has monopolized and steals from us to pay for. They’re all outside of our realm of influence because, unlike the private sector where we can fire Verizon if we don’t like our phone service, if we don’t pay our taxes they arrest you. There’s literally a gun pointed at your head saying “your money or your life.” In the private sector this is known as extortion and theft.

There’s no reason to call it any different just because the Government thieves have nice suits.

I really want to agree with Scott on his last comment and pound the gavel. The problem is that the reason things are that way are because that is what the demos demands. It is what we have always demanded. It is one of the inherent difficulties in democracy.

I remember that my World Civ prof used to always quote Cicero… I am going from memory so will not get it exact, but it was something to the effect that…

“The beginning of the end of the Roman Republic was when the rabble in the streets realized they did not have to grow grain in the Spring to reap it in the Fall, but merely to vote themselves a portion from the local granary.”

Essentially, the masses vote our stomachs even if that means eating up next year’s seed corn. We do the same thing privately and individually. Just look at the stats on credit card debt.

  13. comment number 13 by: Scott (@hardtowant)

Wow, I gotta say I like the other Scott’s answer. I never really thought about it like that. Something does need to change in order to get spending under control. In our small town elections, we voted for all sorts of spending increases that come from our property taxes, and a lot of them were approved. I shoulder a lions share of that. I’m all for paying for my way through life, but the money should be spent wisely, and I certainly think that the government grossly mismanages it.

Neal - Your post was held for moderation because it contained 2 links in it. I just logged in and found it.

Thanks. I enjoy reading your site as well, and try to send as many people over there as possible. These are issues that need to be addressed and both the Democrats and the Republicans are afraid to lose votes, so they won’t address these issues.

I’ll check out your other site tonight, as well as that other link.

Scott (bob) - Good comments. I’ll have to give them more thought. These are new ideas to me.

What really bothers me is that the gov’t now takes a cut out of my paycheck. And it’s a large cut at that. No argument they don’t run efficiently, and no argument as well that it’s extortion.

Yonder - And it’s not just “corn.” It’s natural resources as well.

Scott (hard to want) - I go to those things every once in awhile and it’s amazing how much gets approved. I’d love to have someone in there just say “no” to everything, out of general principle.

    Yonder -
