Pirates!
July 9th, 2007Hope you all had a marvelous weekend.
Considering it was ridiculously hot over here, we stayed out of the sun most of the weekend, going for walks late at night and enjoying pizza and sushi. I was too lazy to cook.
On Saturday, had some people over, including two fellow bloggers. To protect their privacy, I won’t mention who they are, because not everyone wants the world to know they have geek sides to them. As you already know, I’m proud of my geek side.
There’s a game we play called Pirates of the Spanish Main where you buy card packs and inside the card packs are two ships that you assemble, plus some coins, a dude or a chick who play a minor role, a tiny six-sided die, and a bunch of pirate treasure coins.
It’s all about the gold, baby! We played teams and while I kept getting attacked, my partner collected gold from the islands. I only lost one ship, because every time I got wounded too badly, I limped those ships into port while my other ships covered them.
The strategy proved successful, for in the end, we ended up with the most gold. Regardless of how many ships you have left in the end, what counts is the gold.
The picture is my fleet with one of my drawings in the background. I did a little bit of editing with The GIMP, a tool I got several of my friends hooked on.
The picture’s a thumbnail so click on it if you want to view it.
This game sounds almost like D&D without wizards and such and monsters. I know a little J likes his RPG’s. Not a lot though. Sounds like an awsome weekend though minus the shushi for me please. LOL..
Tweety - Yeah, it’s like a Pirates version of it. A lot of fun. I remember you don’t like sushi though.
“not everyone wants the world to know they have geek sides”
I sometimes dream in hex code
Jean - Heh. I used to write webpages using hex code. It’s so much easier nowadays with all these neat-o tools.
Sounds like a fun game. I used to play Magic and H used to play D & D. I like strategy games, in general. Glad you had a good weekend!
Sounds like a pretty fun game actually! I am not ashamed of my geek side.
Also, nice photo editing there. I started out using the gimp, then got hooked and upgraded to Adobe Photoshop.
Notta - I’ve never played Magic, but did play AD&D v1 back in the 80s.
Bsoholic - Yeah, I’m quite impressed by your Photoshop skills. But I don’t think I’ll ever give up on the Gimp, because there are a lot of cool filters and I’m not sure if there’s Photoshop on Linux or not.
Yaaaarrrgh!
Oi matey!
ZS - not sure on Linux but my version (PC) of Photoshop has more filters than my version of Gimp did. However, Photoshop is sort of pricey - and the Gimp is quite a useful image manipulating tool.
Hmmm sushi….
Never heard of Pirates. Here we have a fun party game that I recommend, it’s called Cranium, it’s got different types of games, knowledge, pictionary, charade, acting, singing. It’s great fun for 6 people.
Never be ashamed of Geeks, we’re really cool people ‘cos we don’t care to be geeks. lol. My irrefutable logic strikes back!
Bsoholic - No denying Photoshop is a better product. It’s just I don’t use half the filters, so it would be overkill spending money for it.
La Cremiere - I love Cranium. I wish I had someone to play it with here.
Z! That Pirates game is great, huh? The packs are a bit pricey, but beyond that it is loads of fun. And just about anyone can play, even kids.
I have a son and a grandson that wear the “Geek” label with pride. You’re in good company!
How many people do you need to play Pirates? It sounds like something our family would love. So many good games require 4 or more people, so we’re constantly on the lookout for 2-3 player games.
Yonder - All you need really are a pack for each player, so that’s $3.99 each, which isn’t bad. it’s a pretty good game.
Tshsmom - Yes, you can play with 2 or 3 players. I’m a team guy, so I prefer 4 players, but that’s just me. I don’t think you’re supposed to play teams, but we do.
All you need is a table. Everything else, including dice, come with the packs.
There is nothing on earth like a good game, one that consumes your attention and is thrilling to play. It’s been a long time since I enjoyed one like you are describing.
Thanks ZS!
Yeah… I think the packs I got were sort of mismatched. There were some ships that were just so much better than others that it was hard to get a fair game. But we were playing the simple version with just two people. Probably if you have more people it is a lot better.
I suck at card things but that photo looks really cool
I’m sorry I haven’t been around much, I’m judt not totally “with it” these days…. Your patience means a lot and thank you for keeping me in your thoughts…
Scott - Give this one a try. You might like it.
Tshsmom - Sure. Let me know if you play it.
Yonder - That’s the thing, you can have a gross mismatch. But the way to offset it is play with 5 ships each. Each ship has their strengths and weaknesses. If a ship can’t fight, don’t fight. Instead, avoid battles and steal. You’ll find that a good player can win with whatever ships they get stuck with.
Jean - Well, I just hope you get better. Worried about your health. But these little ships are really cool. I have them by my main computer and they kind of set a scene.
