A few political issues…
August 28th, 2007Poisoning Americans with Chinese goods
So, the Washington Post reported recently that the FDA detained 107 food imports from China at U.S. ports last month. I’m telling ya, it’s in your best interest not to buy from China, especially food, for your family and your pets. Get this - they found dried apples preserved with a carcinogen, mushrooms with illegal pesticides, and prunes tinted with chemical dyes not approved for human consumption. You still want to eat anything from China?
Feinstein gets tough on illegals
Kudos to Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), one of my two California Senators. As soft as President Bush is on illegal immigrants (I’m under the impression Bush loves illegals, or at least loves their cheap labor, not paying health insurance or other benefits, etc.), Feinstein is tough.
Feinstein’s plan is anti-amnesty, and will force illegals to learn English, pay a fine of $5000 + a $3000 processing fee, work or get an education, pass a national security check, apply for a Z-visa, not commit crimes, and return to their own country before submitting their application. Sounds harsh? Well, take a guess what legal immigrants have to do.
She’s also planning to double the amount of Border Patrol agents and drastically increasing fines for companies that hire illegals. That’s where I would put a lot of the emphasis. Companies hire illegals so they don’t have to pay benefits, Social Security, and follow worker safety laws. So I’m glad her plan includes severe punishments to those who hire illegals.
Her plan also includes detention of those caught, instead of the current “catch and release” policy we have now.
Is the plan perfect? No, but it’s probably as good as we’re going to get from our current Senate. I know it’s cynical of me to say that, but there are times when even I have to consider stooping to realpolitik.
Another reason I will never join the NRA
One thing liberals never get, is that a lot of gun owners are not NRA members. I’m thankful for their gun safety classes and some of the other things they do, but when it comes to politics, I frankly think they suck.
I’m a Lifetime GOA member, the organization that doesn’t compromise. Once again, the NRA is in bed with the Brady bunch, approving the horrible Leahy Brady expansion act. So that means we’re calling on our Pro-Gun Senators to filibuster
We don’t need more laws. We already have too many. It’s time we start removing, not adding laws, especially ones that affect the Bill of Rights.
What’s the Leahy Brady expansion act? Would you consider yourself a Libertarian? Not judging, just asking.
I think your Senator is doing more to decrease the Border thing more than our own President is so NO I do not think its harsh. I have told you what I think on that subject and I wish there were more people like her. I have said whats going on here WI and its distressing really. Well enough from me today. Take care.
wow! i had no idea feinstein was that tough on illegals. i never would have guessed. that just astounds me, though i think it’s good. it should not be easier to be an illegal than to be a legal.
Feinstein said that? I’m amazed! We definitely need to come down hard on the employers. We also need to stop giving tax breaks to companies that outsource!
The only way we will get through to China is to STOP BUYING THEIR PRODUCTS! We shouldn’t import ANYTHING that doesn’t meet our safety standards! That’s one of the reasons why our products are higher priced: Our manufacturers have to meet safety standards by using more expensive ingredients!
“Her plan also includes detention of those caught, instead of the current “catch and release” policy we have now.”
Where are we going to detain them and for how long? And who is going to pay for this? (We are of course. I’d rather have them working than sitting in a prison costing me money)
Kathleen - Some of the provisions of the bill include denying guns for anyone who saw a psychologist and was said to have even a remote chance of suicide, which is silly because a lot of people have had depression in the past. This could deny guns to a lot of potential gun owners. The other part I find appalling is if you’ve ever been on Ritalin, it would deny your Right to own guns.
The bill does not have a number yet, so I’ll keep everyone informed.
No, I’m not Libertarian. Don’t worry, I don’t find it as an insult in any way. I agree with their belief in Rights, I just disagree with their environmental beliefs. I’m a big-time environmentalist, but that’s another topic.
Tweety - Scary, because I never thought it would happen to Wisconsin.
Lime - it should not be easier to be an illegal than to be a legal.
I 100% agree.
Tshsmom - Every single thing you said, I agree with 100%.
Exmi - No idea. And no idea how long the detention is. I’ll have to read more into it. It was kind of vague on that part.
I’m generally anti-gun, but as long as it’s legal to own them, I see your point about the Leahy-Brady bill. I view this as a reaction against the VA Tech massacre which is silly because not everybody who has ever been depressed is going to shoot people up. I do contend that guns make it hell of a lot easier to kill large numbers of people.
Diane Feinstein is completely right. Making it easier for an illegal to become a citizen will just encourage people to do it illegally instead of trying it the legal way. Stupid.
Kathleen - Well, gun control is a can of worms I don’t want to open now (I got a nice buzz going), but yeah, I agree that making it easier for an illegal to become a citizen will definitely encourage people to do it illegally.
