Talk about punishing the victim

November 23rd, 2007

In Saudi Arabia last Tuesday, a 19-year-old victim of a gang rape was sentenced to six months in jail and 200 lashes, only because she was with an unrelated male when she was gang raped.

Imagine that. Here’s a young woman who had just been gang raped and she gets jail time and 200 lashes. Her crime? Being in a car with a man who wasn’t her relative.

The full story was, she was in a car with a man who was not her relative, got carjacked by two other men, then they took her to a secluded area and seven men total raped her. Her friend was also raped by these thugs.

The international outcry so far has been strong. Yes, Saudi Arabia has officially not left the Middle Ages, while the rest of the world has somewhat advanced. The day after Thanksgiving, I’ll have to add one more thing on the list to be thankful for - that I don’t live in Saudi Arabia.

The more I hear about other countries, the more glad I am that I live where I do, especially being a woman.

Lime & Notta - Both strongly agreed. The level of misogyny in that country is sick.

Poor girl. What a pathetic country. This is a nice little passage from the Koran. Turns out they veil the women because they prefer boys.

    (Koran 76:19)
And round about them will serve boys of perpetual
freshness: if thou seest them, thou wouldst think
    them scattered pearls.

Hi there. You know off the topic real quick Jeff told me last night he didnt like me blogging at first and he stood corrected last night after he talked to you.. Thank you. I e-mailed you back so you can read that there and not have me rehash it here.

Anyway on to the post yes I agree with Notta and Lime. I am so glad I dont live over there and I have my freedom of living and doign what I want. If I want to wear shorts over my swim suit during the summer i can and then not have to worry about covering the rest of my body up. That is sick how they treat there woman and just there society all together over there.

Skeletorsambora - That’s just sick. Yeah, yet another reason I hate dogma.

Tweety - That’s great to hear. Well, it’s been good for you too because you stay in touch with SME & Tshsmom.

And yes, I’m thankful my wife and all the other women I care about don’t live there. My wife has gotten rides home with males from her work. I can’t imagine something horrible like this happening to her here, and then getting a jail sentence and lashings on top of being a victim or a horrible crime.

    Fuck that shit!
That’s why I avoid that area. I don’t have my gun.

Kate - I love a woman who loves guns.

I don’t think she’ll survive 200 lashes. Which, I suppose, is the whole point. :(

And she was originally sentenced to 90 lashings. They retried her case and sentenced her to the additional 110 and prison term for using to media to speak out about how she was being punished. I’m not sure which part of the sentence to be more pissed off about.

Tshsmom - That’s what I’m fearing. Geez, even 90 lashes can be fatal. These people are sick!

Courtney - That society is extremely misogynistic. God forbid a woman has a voice. I’m glad people are finally starting to see just how bad Islamic Fundamentalism is. It’s just sad that it’s at this poor lady’s expense.

The sad thing is that there are still people in this country who blame the victim when a woman gets raped, because she was wearing the wrong thing or whatever.

Did they catch the men who did this? What is thought of the fact that they raped the “unrelated man?” Must be nice to live in a country where you can do whatever you want because you just the evil woman.
