Walking on eggshells around Muslims
December 9th, 2007My God. You got to be kidding me.
Is it possible to be more hypersensitive than the Islamic religion? I mean, seriously, can anyone be more hypersensitive than Muslims? I make fun of politically correct liberals all the time for being hypersensitive, but his is a whole new level.
Now, I wish I was making up this story, but I’m not. This is true. In Sudan, an English schoolteacher is going to jail for 15 days for naming her teddy bear Mohamed. Supposedly, she narrowly got away from a even more harsh sentence of forty lashes. In Sudan, protests erupted and many of the protesters complained the sentence was too lenient. She deserved death. Yes, death.
The audacity! No Christian who ever lived named their teddy bear “Jesus” and I’m sure no Buddhist who ever lived named their teddy bear “Buddha.” Why, I’d be so offended, if someone named their teddy bear Jesus, I’d stop what I’m doing right now and go to their house and shoot them so full of holes, they’d be picking up pieces for days! Weeks! Years!
I’m being sarcastic of course, but I assume you know that. I’ve seen Cradle of Filth twice live and Dimmu Borgir once. I know they’re offensive, but their music is good. Had they said a tenth of the things about Islam that they say about Christianity, they’ll have more fatwas than the number of games the Detroit Lions choke (that’s a lot of fatwas).
I don’t know about you, but I’m embarrassed for my Muslim relatives and friends. I’m embarrassed the same way I was embarrassed by Mark Chmura’s (a Christian and a Green Bay Packer) dumb ass who refused to visit Bill Clinton because of moral reasons, then he proceeded to have a sexual affair with his underage babysitter.
In the sake of Islamic P.R., I call on moderate Muslims to break this woman out of jail and beat some of these whackjobs’ asses. This makes you look bad, really bad. I’m serious. Really, really bad. No other religion is this hypersensitive. No other religion is doing crap like this.
You’ve become the laughingstock of the 21st century. Don’t give me poverty as an excuse. There are Hindus that are a heck of a lot more poor than you, yet they don’t put people in jail for making fun of that dude with the elephant head or that chick with the six arms.
I am not against Islam. I will make that clear. I will also make clear that I will call someone an idiot when they’re being an idiot, and those people are being idiots. I will also make it clear that Islam needs some serious P.R. work, especially when crap like this makes international news.
i have to say i was pleasantly surprised to see various british muslim societies publicly speak in defense of this teacher. you hear about such atrocities and the muslim population is silent on the issue, giving tacit approval to such extreme behavior. so it was very good to hear muslim authorities and groups decry the harsh punishment.
my one remaining question is, why did they not decry the flogging and jailing of a saudi woman who was gang raped? i guess it’s ok to further victimize a woman who has already been brutalised if she had the audacity to get into a car with men who were not relatives?
Amazing really. I still cant believe they wanted to kill her. So they next time we go to my dad’s house and he buys the girls one of those build a bears we should name both bears Jesus??? LOL.. Just to see if we can piss the public off??? LOL… I mean come on here.
Lime - I’m glad there was outcry among moderate Muslims in Britain. There needs to be more. And yes, the gang rape victim is far worse off. First she has to deal with the brutality of the gang rape, then lashes and jail on top of that.
Tweety - Heh. Good idea. I think I’ll start naming everything after religious figures of every religion, just to do. “Hey! Shiva! Bad dog! Get off the couch!”
Not to steal from Bill Cosby but I thought my name was Jesus Christ for years as kid. My grandfather could be heard many times saying something to this effect: “Jesus Christ what in the hell were you thinking son?” along with other questions about my thought processes and actions.
Thankfully the lady in question was released and is now safely home.
I think there is probably more to it then meets the eye. Perhaps the Sudanese had other issues and used this as an excuse.
Two British muslim Peers went out to secure her release and like Lime says muslim parties did speak out over here in the UK.
We don’t know how it was reported in the Sudan, the people were certainly whipped up into a frenzy and I find it impossible to believe, that given the facts, they would have wanted to kill her.
There are idiots in all religions, I just wish the leaders of all of them would bang their heads together and teach them about tolerance. The world would be a better place for all of us :]

Beach - My mother always used to call me a son of a b*tch. I don’t know if she realized the irony in that. It meant duck though because whatever was in her hand at the time was soon heading in the direction of my head. That’s probably why I was so good at sports. I got my reflexes at an early age.
Miladysa - That’s good news. I was genuinely concerned for her well being.
The most sad part of it all is the big losers in this are the children. A lot of would be teachers will be turned off from teaching in Sudan now. Stories like these kind of kill any incentive to teach there.
And yes, there are idiots in every religion.
Wait a minute, Zombie. Religion keeps people from doing bad things to one another. Religion teaches us tolerance, and to be kind to one another. So don’t you go saying… Hold on a minute. Come to think of it, I don’t know any truly God-fearing person that fits that description whatsover. I’m thinking that maybe the world would be better off without religion altogether. I’m not sure who it helps, except to inure the guilty from feeling responsible for their actions.
I don’t understand why it’s OK to name your kid Mohammed, but you can’t name a kid’s toy Mohammed.
You’re right. The so-called moderate Muslims need to prove to the world that not every Muslim is f$%&ked in the head!
Scott - Religion has its place. I’ve seen first hand alcoholics using religion to help beat their disease. I’ve also seen first hand people using religion to justify not liking a certain group of people. So like anything else, it’s the members of the group, and there’s always some loud, obnoxious dumbass who makes the whole group look bad.
Tshsmom - There’s a passage in the Koran that says it’s okay to name your child Mohammad but not your teddy bear. You can also name your camel Mohammad but not your dog. You can name your bowling ball Mohammad but not your other sporting equipment.
I think the law states that anyone naming your dog Mohammad gets beheaded, and anyone naming your baseball glove Mohammad gets stoned to death.
Thanks for clearing that up! *giggle*
Two questions. 1) Is it ok to name a mentally retarded child Mohamed? 2) Are Muslim dolls all veiled up?
I’m reading the most fabulous book right now (Three Cups of Tea) which actually gives an explanation of why Muslim extremism is spreading, particularly, amongst the very poor Muslims - it’s what they’re being taught, particularly in Pakistan. The oil-rich Saudis who practice a conservative, fundamentalist offshoot of Sunni Islam are going into the excessively poor areas and building mosques and schools and it’s the only education these kids are receiving. I highly recommend the book, of which this tidbit is only a very small portion. It’s eye-opening.
A-frickin-men!
An idiot is an idiot is an idiot. Regardless of ‘brand’.
I just have to say that you have got to read “The Trouble with Islam Today” you will find it extremely interesting and encouraging I think.
Oh, and Kathleen is absolutely correct - Wahabbi Islam is a key source of extremism in the world. The US has our part to play in it as well, since during the proxy war in Afghanistan, we covertly funded the very madressas in Pakistan that eventually produced the Taliban and that had the same mentality as Osama and his followers. Some authors (like the aforementioned Manji) call it “Arab colonization” of Islam…
Tshsmom - You’re welcome.
Skeletorsambora - 1) No. 40 lashes.
2) Yes. If you take a veil off a doll, 57 lashes.
Kathleen - Thanks. I’ll look out for it.
BJ - Agreed.
Laura - I’ll look out for that book too. And yes, the “good guys” were anti-Soviet. Who cared if they were fundamentalistic idiots who treat women like garbage and blow up 1000-year-old Buddha statues as long as they’re anti-Soviet, right? So we armed them and it’s come back to bite us in the ass.
