Merry Christmas!

December 25th, 2007

Merry Christmas! Damn right I celebrate Christmas. I have no apologies for it, and encourage everyone to if they want. I have become very anti-political correctness, and any attempt to silence me from saying Merry Christmas makes me say it louder and prouder.

But it’s offensive to non-Christians

Hate to break it to you, Christmas isn’t even a Christian holiday. It was stolen from the Pagans in order to win them over to Christianity. There’s a one in 365 chance Jesus was born on Christmas. I’m no Bible expert, but I’m pretty certain there’s no passage in the New Testament that says the date of His birth.

Christianity stole various aspects of Christmas from a multitude of Pagans. One was Saturnalia, a Roman winter festival that was known for relaxation, eating tons of food, gambling, drinking, giving small presents to kids and candles to adults, and public nudity. Sound familiar? Well, besides the public nudity part.

Christians also stole from the Scandinavians. They had Yule which was celebrated on mid-winter night, and followed by 12 wild nights. Hmm…I wonder where that 12 days of Christmas song got its idea from.

Santa Claus, Christmas trees, and Father Christmas

All three of these things were stolen from various Pagan religions. Santa Claus and Father Christmas in some cultures are synonymous. You also have Saint Nicholas and Kris Kringle to add to the confusion. But don’t forget Sinterklaas, Saint Basil, and Father Frost now. Can any of you Bible experts find any references to any of those names in the Bible? I bet you can’t, because they’re even more traditions stolen from the Pagans.

So I have to ask, do you still think Christmas is an exclusively Christian holiday? I say no. It’s cultural, and open to anyone who wants to celebrate it.

So Merry Christmas everyone! If you celebrate another holiday besides Christmas, more power to you. Heck, invite me over. I’ll celebrate with you. I’m all about the holidays, baby!, especially when food, wine, and hot chicks are involved. (Well, the hot chicks part is something I added).

MERRY CHRISTMAS ZS, Mrs ZS, and Jr!!

I, too, love the way the traditions of so many cultures are melded together to celebrate the birth of the Messiah. So many unbelievers try to convince us that Christmas is bogus because of these traditions. Personally, I love ANYTHING that brings the human race together!

I often get asked why I celebrate Christmas, if I’m an atheist. My answer is that Christmas is no more a Christian Holiday than I am a fairy princess.

I also get ticked at the oh-so PC notion that, “you CAN’T say ‘Merry Christmas!’” But it also ticks me off when individual people, who aren’t so much trying to be uber-PC, but polite when they say “Happy Holidays” get read the riot act by pro-Christian Fundamentalists who feel persecuted.

I say people should get over it. It’s the one time of year when people attempt to be nice to each other (except when it comes to shopping, then people are vicious). Say what you’re comfortable saying, and don’t tell others what they should be comfortable saying. Simple.

So, Merry Christmas ZS and Mrs. ZS!

Christmas traditions are wild. The French had a King of Christmas they called “The Abbot of Misgovernment”… sounds like a good job to have. In Scandinavian countries they had funky Christmas traditions like house elves that left gifts, and Father Christmas’s brother showed up a few days after Christmas if he showed up at all.

SME - I was wondering where JK Rowling got house elves from. I found most of her other magical creatures.

BJ - Thanks. I love Christmas, and know Christians, Pagans, and Atheists that celebrate it. And only this week, I found some Hindus that celebrate it. I asked and they said they started about a decade ago when their kids were smaller.

Courtney - Awesome! More power to you.

Although I think the drivers are more annoying than the shoppers this time of the year.

Tweety - All the religions have celebrations this time of the year probably to fatten themselves up before a winter that could possibly kill them if they didn’t. So that’s why it seems every religion has something this time of the year.

Lime - That family’s awesome. And I bet they were fun too. :)
Tshsmom - Personally, I love ANYTHING that brings the human race together!

    Me too.

Sadie - Ah, welcome back! I had to google to find your new blog. Now I won’t be a stranger.

    Merry Christmas Zombie!
It is a fact that Jesus was not born on Christmas day, I reckon the Vatican chose this date so that Pagans would stop celebrating the Pagan holiday of Winter Solstice. Anyway, Jesus was still a great man and inspired the world with wonderful values that are nice to remember and celebrate on this day. Although, I hear you retorting that the world should respect these values everyday, not just on Christmas. :)

Hope you had a good Christmas. I did.

Now where is that celebration with the Hot Chicks?

Tweety - It was fabulous. Thanks! :)
    Kitem - Thanks. Dropping by…

Helen - I think you are right, but I still think there’s a 1 in 365 chance Jesus was born on December 25th.

Exmi - I’m trying to find that one out myself. ;)

And as somebody pointed out, the day is called Christmas, why is it offensive to anybody to say Merry Christmas? Do they get upset when someone’s wished Happy Boxing Day or Happy Valentine’s Day, Happy Presidents Day, etc.? I’m not offended if somebody wishes me Happy Holidays, but I generally respond with a Merry Christmas.

Me too. I say Merry Christmas, because December 25th is Christmas.
