Brett Favre retires
March 4th, 2008It’s a sad day for the Green Bay Packers and the NFL. The NFL lost the best QB of the post-Niner domination era, and both the most exciting QB and the toughest to ever play the game.
Several people I know are going to call in sick. I’m not going to. I’m not going to sit around the house and sulk. I got a lot of work to do at work and doing work will help me keep my mind off of it, but I’ll be avoiding people all day.
It won’t be easy for me to deal with this. Funny thing is I’ve had some bad breakups, but this is worse. I was convinced that he’d come back and I was saving up for a trip to Green Bay this year.
I decided instead to use that money for musical equipment. I want to get a recording done while I’m still relatively young.
As for the Packers, I’m hoping the Cal kid Aaron Rodgers can pull it off. As for Favre, I hope he enjoys his retirement, but I have a feeling he’ll be itching to play and might come back for another team in ‘09. I sincerely hope he does, and that team will be instantly my 2nd favorite team.
[hug]
Stay positive and make that recording dream come true.
I hope that you share your music with us one day
I am trying to listen to the tv because they are doing a I cant think of the word here… LOL.. A blonde for you.. LOL.. Anyway its sad to know he retired because they wouldnt hire some he recommended. Now I cant think of his name either. Oh boy and I am suppose to be a packer Fan… Real good packer fan when I cant even think of the names of people. I agree with you I hope he enjoys retirement. He has so much money that he will be set for life or almost set for life. Yes what kind of recording are you planning. Hard rock, soft rock or somewhere between? Now you have my curiosity up.
That was a surprise. He kept coming back when the Packers were bad, but retired when they got good.
No one plays forever. Years from now you’ll still be remembering all the great Favre moments at random times during the day. I still think about the Aikman, Smith, Irvin Days often.
Miladysa - Thanks. And yes, I’ll share.
Tweety - That guy was Randy Moss. Yeah, he signed with the Patriots for $27 for 3 years.
It will be Heavy Metal.
Skeletor - Yeah, that’s what’s weird.
There’s a guy who comes to this site named Scott who’s a huge Cowboys fan. He named one of his kids Emmitt. That’s really saying something.
OH! I never connected Scott’s son’s name with a football player before! DUH!
I’m sorry for you, because I know exactly how you feel. I’ve always liked Brett Favre.
Maybe its just me but after working all those years and surviving with few injuries I’d take the money and head to some beach and enjoy life without some 300 pound linebacker trying to turn me into salsa.
As a viking fan I know you may be expecting me to rejoice at this ZS but alas I am not. I was listening to KFAN (local sports talk radio station) and when I heard the story breaking they all started to celebrate. In a way it really sickened me because they were acting like total jackasses. I may be a loyal, die-hard vikings fan but I have all the respect in the world for Favre and will forever. The man is the epitome of a football player, he may not be perfect but he goes out there and gives it his all every game he played. The fact that he only got one ring is criminal (although Marino and Fouts would strongly disagree
) and I wish him the best in retirement. I suspect he will stay in Mississippi and hang out with family and friends, I don’t see him becoming an analyst because he doesn’t seem too articulate. He just seems like a good ol boy from the south (by the way, nothing wrong with that) who wants to watch his kids grow up now.
One last thing, I ran into a guy at school today in the bathroom who was wearing a Favre jersey. I asked him how he was doing and he gave me a puzzled look and I just kinda pointed to the jersey, he sheepishly said “fine” because I think he was expecting for me to rip him (because I’m sure he has gotten an insane amount of grief from friends, MN isn’t very friendly to the green&gold) but I told him, “Look as a vikings fan I know I’m supposed to hate the packers and Favre, but I have the upmost respect for him and what he did. He was a decent human being, which is saying something in today’s NFL, and I tip my cap to him for everything he’s accomplished.” He extended his hand to shake mine because I think he was stunned and relieved that I didn’t ream him. It was one of the very few times in my life I have seen a genuine gesture extended to me with something sports related. Just thought I’d share that with you ZS.
Also, I know how you feel Zs, to a certain extent. The difference is that this was a retirement as opposed to a tragic death. Both Malik Sealy and Korey Stringer were good athletes but outstanding indivduals to top it off. They were heavily involved in the community and were all around decent guys and neither lived to see their 31st birthday. One died from a drunk driver driving on the wrong side of the highway (Sealy) and one died of heat stroke. This also happened within a 24 month span between 1999-2001. So yes ZS, Favre is gone but at least he’s still alive.
Kathleen - Thanks.
Beach - Yeah, I can’t blame him. He’s taken some hits over the years.
Ben - True.
Cool story about the guy in the Favre jersey.
I don’t get some people. There were some Packer fans I got mad at who made a joke about Adrian Peterson’s injury. I found nothing funny about it and felt bad it was one of our guys who injured him. I was glad to see him back.
I like AP a lot, and can see him developing into an excellent Running Back.
I’ve learned to love the game and there’s usually someone on almost every team I like. With the Vikings of course it’s Peterson. I also liked Fran Tarkington a lot who you’ve probably heard a million stories from your father about. I’m old enough to catch the tail end of his career.
My favorite non-Packer of all-time though is Walter Payton. I was so happy for him when they won the Super Bowl in ‘85. I just wish he could have gotten a TD in that Super Bowl. I’m sure he was just glad to be there.
When you mentioned Marino and Fouts, you forgot to include Tarkington. The guy was absolutely amazing, but never had much of an OL. It’s amazing he didn’t get killed.
Going back to death, one player I enjoyed watching who died too soon was Joe Delaney for the Kansas City Chiefs. He was a talented young Running Back, but met his demise when he tried to save the lives of some drowning kids. He saved one of them, but he and one of the kids died. I think he was in his mid-20s when he passed on.
ZS - I met Sweetness at the Toronto race back in 1995 (I think). An extremely gracious man and classy to boot. I cried buckets when he died, especially as it was one day after we had lost Greg Moore. Two members of my Champ Car family gone much too soon.
