Flying Shoes, the Bill of Rights, and the Packers

December 15th, 2008

Yeah, I know President Bush will leave the office hated. You already know all the reasons I can’t stand him. But I will give him a little bit of credit though - he’s got some pretty good reflexes.

The Bill of Rights
went into effect on this date in 1791. It guarantees Freedom of Speech, the Press, Assembly, Religion, the Right to Bear Arms, Freedom from Search and Seizure, protection from Cruel and Unusual Punishments, the Right to not have to incriminate yourself (this is huge and shouldn’t be taken for granted; the British do not have this Right), and of course protection of your Life, Liberty, and Property without due process. Thank you Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and the others who worked on these Freedoms. For those of you in America, don’t take ANY of these for granted. Keep in mind that those who will sacrifice Freedom for Security deserve neither.

Someone asked me why my beloved Packers suck so badly. I’ll tell you 3 reasons:
1) No heart. This team looks lost. I put the blame on the Coaching staff for this one.
2) No lines. I blame the Management for this one. Both the Offensive Line and the Defensive Line suck. I feel bad for Aaron Rodgers, the Packers’ Quarterback, who’s taking a lot more hits than he should. On the other side of the football, teams are running through gaping holes constantly. It’s been painful to watch.
3) Packer fans hate hearing it but it’s true. Intangibles that Brett Favre brought. He made you believe you can win when it defied logic. He has a charisma that is off the charts and people play their best when he’s around. Not at all a knock on the current Packers’ QB who I’m a huge fan of. I’m just giving Favre credit. Don’t be surprised if he wins his fourth MVP this year. Yes, he’s a long shot, but he’s still in the running. That’s one of the many reasons why the Packers are 5-9 and the Jets are 9-5.

Happy Bill of Rights Day. No, it’s not an official holiday but if I were running this country, it would be.

And my Bears are 8-6.

Most Packer fans wanted Brett Favre back, but he retired, so they had to go in a new direction. Then he un-retired at an improper time when everything they had been working on would have to be scrapped.

The MVP race will be tight. The Jets have to finish strong for Favre to have a chance. With Indy hot, Peyton Manning is back in the mix. There’s also Atlanta QB Matt Ryan and RB Michael Turner, Carolina RB DeAngelo Williams, and Dallas QB Tony Romo could take it considering how terrible the Cowboys were without him.

There are several defensive players that could win it too, like Pittsburgh’s Harrison and Polamalu, Miami’s Porter, and Dallas’s Ware. The race is so wide-open, maybe someone I didn’t name will win it.

Kate - Yeah, rub it in.

Skeletor - Romo has a good shot. He’s been looking good. And of course Ware does too.

It would have been easy bringing Favre back. He already knows the playbook. Would have probably costed us to lose Rodgers though and that would be a long-term disaster. I honestly think Rodgers will be a top 10 QB year after year for the next five years. He’s got a tremendous amount of talent a good IQ.

Another name to think of - Adrian Peterson. Don’t rule him out. He’s done amazing things for the Vikings, a team that was nothing last year.

I can’t help but laugh when I see that video of Bush. I wish we all could get an opportunity to throw something at him as he leaves office. I know it’s juvenile, but it would be SOOOOO cathartic.

Laura - He’s failed in almost everything. He’s failed to find Osama bin Laden because we diverted troops elsewhere. If we had gone all out on his ass, we’d have his head on a pike by now. That diversion has cost us several thousand US soldiers’ lives and hundreds of billions.

He’s also caused one of the biggest, perhaps the biggest, recession of my lifetime. He’s been no friend to the Constitution either. My big regret is the guy missed twice.

So yeah, but let’s use tomatoes instead.

Yes, they could have brought Favre back, but that would have been stabbing Rodgers in the back. I forgot Peterson, the rushing leader and most explosive back in the league. So many choices.

wow, i did not know it was bill of rights day. i agree it ought to be a holiday. maybe then the schools woudl be actually required to teach it to the kids and maybe then we’d have elected officials who knew what the hell it means.

Skeletor - Well, last year was clear cut. Tom Brady was head and shoulders the best player in the NFL. This year, there’s no definitive choice. Nobody really stands out.

Lime - Oh, that would be great. The problems at the top start with the bottom. People don’t know their Rights so they don’t vote accordingly, and we get a bunch of self-serving morons in there because of the voters.

If it makes you feel better the Lions are 0-14 (or is it 15)…well on their way to being 0-16. Woohoo!!! If they blow it in the last week(s), I’ll be pissed at them.

Dubya should have the Bill of Rights tattoeed on his forehead…friggin’ idiot.

I’ve read and heard that some people are upset because even though they don’t like him, he’s OUR president. Me? Not so much. I wish more people would throw things at him - tomatoes, rotten eggs, coconut cream pies, but he still wouldn’t get it. Bloody idiot.

Hey Zombie. I just wanted to stop by to see if you were still kicking. I hope everything is going well. Happy holidays to you and your family.

The Packers season took a digger fast, and maybe some of that aura that you speak of had a little to do with it.

But I tend to look squarely on the defensive side of the ball and point my finger of blame.

Rodgers hasn’t stroked it in the later part of the games either.. but if the defense does its job, we win more than we lose this season.

It is a lost season either way.. next year will be interesting indeed.

Pack - The lines is where I put most of the blame. That falls on TT. He’s had four years to build them. He’s failed.

IronMan - You too, amigo. :)
Things are great. Busy, but great.

Miladysa - Thanks and hope all is well there. I’ll drop by tonight hopefully.

Kathleen - Well, what else is new for the Lions. The Lions though have covered the spread against the Colts and that made me happy because I bet on the Lions. I also am betting on them this week to cover the spread. I don’t care if they win, just cover the spread.

    Tchoden - Thanks. :)

    Sorry. ;)

  16. I really liked your blog with the Adrian Peterson item. I think Peterson will be a star in Minnesota.
I try to follow as much NFL news as I can from Sao Paulo, Brazil.
