Can the stupid media stop saying “First Black President?”

April 29th, 2009

Urgh.  I picked up the paper in my Chiropractor’s office and the front page has President Obama’s 1st 100 days.  The very first line is about how the “first black President” is doing in his 1st 100 days.  Knock that the **** off!

I’m tired of hearing it.  I’d like to believe Obama was elected because people thought he was the best person for the job and had NOTHING to do with his race.  In fact, people need to stop looking at race, period.

The media just perpetuates racism by focusing on his race over and over and over and over again.  Knock it off already.

I’m hoping Obama is remembered as the guy who got us out of a horrible recession and a President who respected the Constitution.  That’s what I want from Obama.  Do you really want him to be remembered solely for his race? If so, we still have a long way to go.

Or maybe we don’t, but the media does.  Screw them.  Seriously, I won’t shed a tear when the newspapers all go out of business.  They deserve it.

“Swine flu” and “pandemic” too. I’m not buying the hype and I’m not sure why virtually everyone else is.

I’m not either. So, 1000 people will die. Big deal. That’s less than two weeks of how many people will be killed by cars.

they don’t know how to report anything properly anymore. they bury the important stuff and hype the nonsense.

I know people that voted for Obama just because he is black, and I’m pretty sure many voted against him for the same reason. I just saw the movie Invasion. There is a scene where Kidman responds to a similar complaint, and her reply was very interesting. Of course I don’t have the script in front of me, but her point was that, true, that sort of discrimination still exists today, but she looked at it as “look how far we’ve come” and that she couldn’t have imagined being a post-modern feminist even ten years earlier. It’s not excuse to stop evolving, but it is a damn historic thing that we elected a black president (which of course I know you agree with).

I want to say too that I’m disgusted with Garafalo for what she said on Oberman. That right there is the problem with race relations in this country today. To say that opposition to the president amount to racism, or even that those people are tea-bagging rednecks, is the very essence of irony. Whose being the racist?

I hate Garafalo. She’s a complete nut case.

So, there’s something wrong with someone being poor and white? Isn’t that racist? God forbid you’re poor if you’re white.

She’s a douche. I don’t take anything she says seriously.

Yeah, it’s historic we have a black President, but I’m really looking forward to the day when we drop all the prefixes and just say American. Apparently, we’re still far from it.

It’s one thing to recognize the milestone that was reached by our electing a black president - it IS a significant event considering that a generation ago blacks couldn’t even VOTE. However, I agree that dwelling on it, and using the fact that he’s black to frame everything he does, is counterproductive.

Laura - That’s the thing. Remember what Martin Luther King, Jr. said? He’s looking forward to a world where “a man is judged for the content of his character and not for the color of his skin.”

It’s at the point where he does things because he’s a black man according to the media. That’s bull. The stupid media is obsessed with race. We’d be so much better off if we drop prefixes and just call ourselves American. Obsessing with race is destructive.

I completely agree with your point.

I have to say, though, I was a bit dissapointed because when I read the title of your post I thought you were going to talk about the fact that the media is ignoring that he is of MIXED race.

That kind of inaccuracy is one of my pet peeves, but I also think it is of real significance.

BTW, I just recently discovered your blog and I enjoy it very much. Wish you wold post more often.

Luna - Yeah, forgot to mention that.

I don’t get why if someone is mixed race, the stupid media always mentions the DARKER race. It’s actually pretty annoying, especially since I’m mixed race myself.
