Let’s put something in perspective

May 15th, 2009

One of my Left-wing pinko commie friends and I the other day were talking to a mutual friend of ours who happened to be a Lesbian.  Well, “Harry” started going off on Christianity, like it was the most homophobic religion in the world.  I quickly corrected him and showed him how much of an ass monkey he was.

If anything, Christianity is pretty dang tolerant comparatively.  No, not perfect, but compared to all the other major religions, it’s pretty tolerant.

Let’s put things in perspective.  In India, the most overpopulated place on the planet Earth,  where homosexuality was punishable by DEATH.  Yes, DEATH.  I don’t think it still is, but it was.  For the record, Hinduism is VERY homophobic.

So in California, gay marriage was legal and now it’s illegal again.  Hey, I’m all for gay marriage because you know me, I do not believe ANYONE should tell another adult what to do, especially the government.

But making marriage illegal and killing you are on two entirely different ballparks.  I don’t even think I need to bring up Islam and homosexuality.

So after bringing this up, I flat out brought the question - which major religion is more tolerant than Christianity in regards to homosexuality? Silence.

Exactly.

And there’s more

Not only that, walking distance from Harry’s house is a Methodist church with a rainbow flag on it.  Yes, I’m not making this up.

I had a friend of mine who was an openly gay Priest.

Find that in another major religion.  (For the record, Judaism is pretty split on homosexuality.  There are those very much against it and those who are hands off).

Even among Christians who are opposed to homosexuality, the attitude is “love the sinner, hate the sin.”  So you rarely find the extremes.  Yes, there are the Fred Phelps out there, but he’s a loud, obnoxious jerk who the media loves and is a tiny outspoken minority.  Let’s be real here.

With Hinduism, the majority are homophobic, at the very least uncomfortable with homosexuality.  For in Hinduism, the role of marriage is to breed (which is just about the only thing they’re good at besides stretching).

So why do I even bring this up?

Because I hate misinformation.  And political correctness.  Let’s call a spade a spade.  Sure, Christians aren’t perfect.  But compared to every other major religion out there, Christians are the most tolerant.  Be glad you live in a country with a Christian majority.

“If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: They shall surely be put to death.”
    Leviticus 20:13

The Bible and Koran are both perversely evil. However, a lot of Christians are living in democracies, which have adapted to the 21st century. The same cannot be said for a lot of extremeist Muslims who are living in religious states stuck in the Middle Ages in regards to the absence of rights and the power of religion in government.

It seems Islam has the power now that the Church did in the Middle Ages: controlling governments, preying on the ignorant, and killing the innocent. Here’s a hypothetial question: If the Religious Right set up their own country, made their own laws, taught the Bible in schools, and were not interfered with, would they revert back to Middle-Age Christianity?

Skeletor - This is the thing - most Christians aren’t really that religious. Heck, you should know first hand about Christians in Texas. As religious as they say they are, they’re not. Even among the “Religious Right.”

So to answer your question, if the RR actually had their own country, no, they wouldn’t revert because they saw they had a good thing and don’t want to go back to the Middle Ages.

If I had a dollar for every pair of tits I saw from the RR, I’d buy myself an electric vehicle. And you know that’s only a SLIGHT exaggeration.

The moderate, open-minded Christians make the world a better place. However, there are still millions of Christians in America with extreme beliefs who have the power to elect George W. Bush, fight the teaching of evolution, and prohibit gay marriages. Sure, they’re not as dangerous as jihadists, but their beliefs are still very strong, and they carry a lot of clout.

I knew a gay, deeply-religious Republican, who believed the Bible should be taught in schools because Jesus is the only way to salvation. His religious beliefs were so strong that he followed a book that condemned him to death and a political party that shunned him.

Right now, Islam is the most perverted and destructive religion on earth. There is no use defending any aspect of it, unless you’re a politically-correct pussy (which may be worse than a Jesus Freak). It’s just that domestically Islam isn’t that big of a problem, so that’s why you hear more criticism of Christianity.

That’s not the point though. I’m putting things in perspective.

Why the dislike of Christianity? Compare it to Judaism, Hinduism, or Islam, the other 3 main religions in the world. Let’s be real here. What country would you rather live in, a Christian nation, a Jewish nation, a Hindu nation, or an Islamic nation? I’d take the Christian nation any day of the week, any week of the year, any year of the century.

And it’s not even close. Not even close.

OK, researching the numbers, I should have included Buddhist nations. I could live in a Buddhist nation. Thailand? Hell yeah.

I agree that living in a Christian nation is better than living in a Hindu, Jewish, or Muslim nation. Your post makes sense. I’m just saying all religions deserve ridicule.

    Fo shizzle.

Let’s take that a step further. Every culture deserves ridicule. Every nation deserves ridicule.

Everybody’s full of shit, myself included. The sooner we realize it, the better off we’d be.

I think the Bahai faith might be tolerant. As someone who believes in God, and thinks all religions were invented by man to use God for their own quest for power and greed, From what I can Ascertain. The Bahai faith is the only one that is open minded and does not require subjugation to a made up figurehead.
One positve aspect about Christianity however, is its ability to not only accept criticism, but to question itself.
Any institution that cannot withstand the glare of truth shall reside in the darkness.

Klaatu - Yeah, they seem to be ok. Don’t know it well, but they seem to be more “generic Deists.”

ok, for the record, i’m a Christian of an evangelical stripe who doesn’t have a problem with gay marriage mainly because of the way all the privacy laws have gone way, way overboard. i figure everyone, straight, gay or otherwise ought to be able to have at least one person of their choosing to have full access to their medical issues and insurance and banking and so forth. since common sense has died in these matters, if granting gays the right to marry insures that everyone can have a partner who can legally cross those privacy bridges without excessive amounts of bureaucratic BS, so be it. i suppose even if the bureaucracy were not an issue i wouldn’t be terribly bothered by the idea of gay marriage either though. no one is compelling ME to be homosexual.

do i struggle with the whole issue on other levels? yes i do, very much. but whether i agree or disagree with the choices another person makes or the life they live i know beyond any shadow of a doubt i am not to behave hatefully toward that person. i also know beyond a shadow of a doubt that mere disagreement does not equal hatred. that’s another concept that has died in this culture, respectful disagreement.

so skeletor can rant at me for being a christian at all and the folks i share the pew with can rant at me for sanctioning gay marriage. whatever. jesus pissed off both the liberals and the conservatives of his day. why should i coddle either side?

Lime - Well said. From experience, I’ve found Christians to be by far the most tolerant people out there. Yet, Christians get all the heat. I don’t get it.

One reason of course is because the media loves people like Fred Phelps, and non-Christians love to lump all Christians with Phelps.

The original reason for this post was to put things in perspective. Harry’s a non-Christian, and loves to bash Christians for something that Christians are generally tolerant of, whereas he’s strangely silent when it comes to other religions that are extremely intolerant. The double standard is downright stupid.

I personally am against gay marriage, but like abortion, it isn’t something the government has any right to get involved in.

If these things are a sin, then those who do them will be punished, all in good time, according to Gods law. But for the meantime, let the government stick to what it was designed for…NOTHING ELSE
