British Petroleum and the British

July 5th, 2010

So I was reading in Newsweek that had the situation been reversed, if Exxon Mobil had an accident that dumped 319 million gallons of oil into the North Sea and it was washing all over England’s beaches, we’d never hear the end of it.

How true that is.  How also true about how the British people are strangely quiet and unapologetic.

BP in its cleanup is also using toxic chemicals banned by the EU.  Of course, that doesn’t matter to BP because it’s not affecting Britain.

That is really sad.. It shouldnt matter where they are to use these horrible chemicals.. I think its stupid that they are doing it. I think its stupid they have dumped this much oil into our waters..

I don’t know, but I think the media is being denied access to some of the areas where the oil is affecting the coast the worst. I don’t think we are being told the true extent of the damage, both to the coastline, and to the ocean itself. I think this oil will have much more far reaching and serious consequences than we are being told.

    Just my two cents.

Well, 1) don’t blame the British people for what one of their corporations is doing.

    2) if the EU hadn’t banned those chemicals, you bet your butt BP would be using them in the North Sea. Businesses do what is best for the bottom line - that’s the free market for you.

How about we 1) berate our OWN government for NOT banning those chemicals (and a slew of others that are bad for us that are used in many industries) and 2) berate our OWN government for not passing stricter oversight on this and other industry?

All the Free Market fanboys can’t fault a corporation for doing things that out government has determined it is within their rights to do to make a buck.

Excellent point. We’ve all been too nice about it over here, while they would’ve had 50,000 cows over a massive oil spill. Mad cows.
