Land of the Free, not land of the safe

Read this post + Tag from Xmichra

A post by Raemius.

Overpopulation is going to be a serious problem in the future. You will see resource wars, as they’ve already begun. The other thing Raemius brings up is the possibility of cannibalism. Unfortunately, it has happened many times in history during famines.

Anyways, I’d rather you read his piece so I won’t say anything more.

I always do tags, but usually don’t tag anyone specifically.  This time, Xmichra tagged me.  I actually like this tag.

Somewhere in a faraway bloggiverse on an island with a palm tree swaying in the breeze, a message bottle sits side by side with a Pina Colada and a cute little striped umbrella horizontally tilted in the beachy sand.
Did YOUR bottle make it to land? Have you checked lately?

There are now 285 bottles floating in the bloggy ocean just waiting to be mysteriously delivered to a tropical island near you. It’s time you added yours!

Here are the rules:
You are about to send a virtual Message In a Bottle across the Blog Ocean.
Leave a message in the sand or on the bottle. Write anything you wish. Be a pirate or a poet. Serious or silly. Rant or ruminate.
Anonymous or not.
What message would you like to send out to the universe?

OK, here’s mine:
Do you remember that song in the mid-90s by TLC called “Waterfalls?” It went something like:
“Don’t go chasing waterfalls,
Please stick to the rivers and the lakes that you’re used to.”

I liked the song, but completely disagreed with it. I’ve always believed to leave your element, to chase waterfalls, and try to catch the rainbow. If you don’t, in your old age, you will die with regrets.

I am a hopeless romantic and I have no problem saying it. I believe in chasing your dreams. I think the song I really liked was from the 20s and there were two lines that said “if you don’t have a dream, how are you gonna make your dreams come true?”

Exactly. You got to chase your dreams.

Now, I was making fun of world peace in an earlier post, but that’s not a dream, that’s an absurdity. NOBODY can accomplish that. You might as well try to move Mt. Everest with a shovel. I’m talking about doing what you REALLY want to do in life, not what your parents, your minister, your brother, your sister, your drunk uncle, or your worst enemy wants you to do.

I hear parents all the time tell their children which college they have to go to, which major they have to major in, etc. That’s stupid. You get one shot at being you and you should make the choices, not your parents. Not someone else, period.

If you don’t, you will die with regrets. It’s as simple as that. You are better off giving it an honest shot and failing than wondering what if.

Anyone who wants to take this tag, feel free. Just let me know you took it and I’ll drop by.

Missy, Obama, and a pretty dang good rant

June 13th, 2009

I should probably do a separate post one day on doing what you want to do.  That was what I wanted to get at when I was talking about Missy Suicide, but I guess it was more steered in the direction of her website.

I strongly believe in doing what you want to do in life instead of chasing dollar bills.  The latter will leave you empty.  The former fulfilled.  Money will come.  You just may need to learn to live on less for awhile.

So once again, hats off to Missy.  She created a niche market and is making a pretty fine living doing it.

Obama, Swords, and Umbrellas

So the Obama police have decided to not allow graduating midshipmen of the US Naval Academy at Annapolis to have their ceremonial swords with them.  Get this, they’re also banning umbrellas.  Yes, not making this up.  I guess Obama’s people are afraid that someone will kill him with an umbrella.  What pussies.

To be fair, the Bush people were just as bad.  When he went to Iraq, he had the soldiers screened, then on top of that, their firing pins removed.

So the tyrants are scared of the people they represent.  As tyrants should be.

Speaking of tyrants, you remember that Saddam Hussein guy? He’s that evil dictator in Iraq that we were fighting against (and are still stuck there).  Funny, Hussein let people fire AK-47s in the air in his presence.  Go figure.

Clothosfate has a pretty good rant on stupid-proofing the world and keeping the masses ignorant.  I agree on all counts. Read it and be sure to comment. This is my best rant of the week for this week.

In America, speak English

May 16th, 2009

Let’s just say I get a 12-month contract job for a Software company in Costa Rica.  Within six months, I will guarantee you that I will speak Spanish fluently, have one or two favorite bars, play the popular sport (which I assume is soccer) and know at least five or six regular players, know good beaches on both the Pacific and Caribbean side of Costa Rica, know the best three or four restaurants in town, know a local farmer on a first name basis, know a dentist, a chiropractor, and a masseuse.

All the bartenders in those one or two bars will call me by my first name.  So will the waiters or waitresses in those restaurants.  So will the checkers in the local supermarket.  I will be able to give you directions to all those places, plus will be able to tell you where the post office is, where the larger banks are, where the department stores are, etc.

Now, I don’t expect everyone to immerse themselves as much as I do.  I’m blessed with gift of gab and know my social skills are much better than the average Joe or Jane.  But I do expect people when coming from one country into another to learn the language.  Anyone who refuses to learn the language spoken in their new country is an idiot and should be deported.

Just to make it clear

I do not think that at home, you should be forced to speak a language.  That’s your own personal choice.  But it would make sense to practice it as much as you can.  You want to be able to communicate with native speakers.  If you can’t, you shouldn’t be there except for vacational purposes.

In America, studies have shown that Hispanic folks who speak English make considerably more money than those who don’t.  Imagine that.

Do as the Asians do

I had Asian friends in high school.  One friend, I’ll call him Chang, was told by his father that if he got a C on his report card, don’t bother coming home.  Chang’s father was serious.  He meant it.  So Chang got all As and Bs.  Always.

They learned English fast.  I remember meeting Chang in 7th grade.  He had been there a year.  By 9th grade, his English was pretty dang good.  Funny thing is he still had problems with the concept of plurals, but other than that, he pretty much looked and acted like an American.

I also remember how proud Chang and his family members were when one by one, they became officially Americans.  They voted in every election and had a lot of civic pride.  More power to them.

You’d think this would all be common sense, but apparently it’s not.  There are those in the Hispanic communities that want Americans to cater to them, to have Spanish only classes, and refuse to become Americanized.  I’m calling a spade a spade.  Those people are idiots.

Best blog post of the week

On an entirely different topic, I need to start doing this again.  On my original blog, I used to link to other blog posts that I liked.  I’ll start it up again, and try not to go more than a week without a blog post.

Neal’s post called “There is No Quick Fix” is excellent.  Give it a read if  you have a few extra minutes.

By the way, if anyone knows a Software company in Costa Rica that is hiring and pays well, let me know. I have a friend of mine who just got back and showed me pics. Dang, I’d love to work there for a year.

Happy New Years!

December 31st, 2008

Happy New Years everyone!

I’ll be heading over to a party in a bit.  Hope all is well for everyone and hope everyone is healthy, and everyone who wants work has work.  Scary times.

Speaking of scary times, read Raemius’s Word on the Economic Crisis.  Yes, a lot of problems are caused by layoffs, outsourcing, and being undercut by globalism as I mentioned three years ago, but Raemius is spot on that a lot of economic problems are also caused by greed and mismanagement at the family level.  He shows a hypothetical situation of Jill and Joe Sixpack not spending money very wisely.  Unfortunately, this is literally half the people I know.

I have a few regrets in life. One of which is I don’t own a publishing company. I’ve always wanted one, and still haven’t reached that goal. There are a lot of good authors out there that are unpublished. Now, I don’t know if Miladysa is published or not, but I do know that her fiction should be if it isn’t. Read this for one example of something that I wish I was reading in my hands, not only online on a blog. Her fiction takes you there. I like fiction that can take you in so you feel you’re actually there experiencing what’s going on.

Please welcome Neal

September 11th, 2008

Folks,

Please welcome Neal, who got sick of Blogger and asked me about other hosting options.  I told him that I own zombie-slayer.com, and offered to host his blog and he accepted.

I’ve always liked Neal’s writing.  Even in the few cases we disagree, I appreciate that he thinks out everything he believes and doesn’t just get his ideas spoonfed by the media or some ass clown on the radio or television with a lot of charisma.

Anyways, his blog is at http://www.zombie-slayer.com/neal and so far it’s looking pretty good. Drop by and say hello.

I still haven’t decided who I’ll vote for for President, but I guarantee you it won’t be Obama or McCain.  I strongly believe in our Constitution, and neither will do a fair job at defending it, so neither will get my vote.

Someone I really admire once said that you’re supposed to stand up for what’s right, not for what’s popular.  I’ve lived by that my whole life, and often got a lot of flack for it.  Unfortunately, I don’t remember who said it so I can’t give that person credit.

When I figure out who I’ll be endorsing, I’ll let you all know.

One more thing, if you’re wondering why I keep disappearing from the blog world, this is why.  When you have this right outside your house, how can you expect me to stay inside on the computer? This is a picture I took before going on my uphill sprints.
